Supplemental Certification

Master reading teacher

Master Reading Teacher certification allows a teacher to serve as a master trainer for the certified reading teachers in their school. Districts offer salary stipends to teachers in this role.

Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi offers two methods for earning Master Reading Teacher certification:

  1. If you already hold the Reading Specialist professional certificate, you will take nine semester hours of prescribed graduate courses in reading. You do not need to take a state licensing exam. Instead, you will apply directly to the State of Texas for your certificate.
  2. If you do not hold the Reading Specialist professional certificate, you will take 12 semester hours of prescribed graduate courses in reading. You must also pass TExES test #85 to earn your certificate.

Contact the College of Education's Department of Curriculum and Instruction at 361-825-3201 for more information on how to prepare for Master Reading Teacher Certification.
